Concrete Floor Stain Made Easy

Feb 02, 2015 03:47AM, Published by Family Features, Categories: Family Features

(Family Features) Stained concrete is an option for low-maintenance flooring that can give a living space, such as a basement recreation area, a unique textured look. With a little elbow grease, it’s also a project you can accomplish on your own, making it not only custom, but also cost-efficient.

Follow these steps to create your own custom stained concrete floor.

  • First, determine whether you prefer a water-based stain, which results in a more consistent color but will likely fade over time, or an acid-based stain, which reacts with the concrete for a distinct textured look that is permanent.
  • Before you begin staining, carefully clean the floor, including sweeping and mopping and removing any debris such as carpet glue. A completely smooth, clean surface gives the best results.
  • Next, protect the walls using painters tape and masking paper that extends up at least a foot. If you have baseboards, you may want to consider removing them altogether to prevent damage from splashing or spills.
  • Follow label instructions for preparing the stain, remembering to wear proper protective gear and doing your mixing in a well ventilated area.
  • Use a plastic pump sprayer to apply the stain. Be sure to test the color in a small discrete area and make any adjustments before beginning to cover a larger area. (Small spray bottles are ideal for smaller spaces and edging, and they will help avoid brush strokes.)
  • Keep the wand about a foot and a half off the ground as you apply the stain. Cover thoroughly, but not so much that you leave standing puddles.
  • Allow stain to dry thoroughly between each coat, whether it’s the same color or an additional color to create texture and dimension.
  • Once you’ve achieved the desired look, thoroughly mop the floor. Remove any excess water using a vacuum and allow the floor to dry completely before applying a sealant coat.
  • Once the sealer is dry, you can remove the tape and masking paper and reinstall baseboards, if necessary.

Then all that’s left is to arrange your furniture and begin enjoying your new room.
