10 Best Places To Pick Apples And Pumpkins In & Around The Upper Valley

With Labor Day Weekend in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look ahead to fall and all things apple and pumpkin. If you like to get yours straight from the farm, here are some places for you to check out. Many of these spots offer more than apples and pumpkins, with most having festivals, food, and fun as well.

Riverview Farm (141 River Road, Plainfield)

Riverview Farm has both apples and pumpkins. It is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also visit the Corn Maze while you’re there. After years of the maze being designed by Gary Hamel, this year’s maze was created by new maze designer, Emily Zea. www.riverviewfarm.com


Pleasant View Orchard, Grafton, NH

Pleasant View Orchards has 40-acre apple orchard has been around since the 1930s. They grow more than 20 varieties of apples. You can pick your own apples or buy pre-picked ones in the store.  www.pleasantvieworchardin.com


Cardigan Mountain Orchard, Alexandria, NH

The original trees for this orchard were planted in the 1930's and are still producing a lot of the apples. More have been added for a total of approximately 1,000 trees. Many of the apples are available for pick-your-own customers. Cardigan Mountain Orchard is open every day from Labor Day to the end of October (as long as there are apples) from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. There is also a country store and café to enjoy. www.cardiganmtnorchard.com


Cedar Circle Farm, East Thetford, VT

Cedar Circle Farm and it's certified organic pumpkin patch opens at the farm with the Pumpkin Festival on October 7th. On that day you can enjoy good food, live music, horse-drawn wagon rides, fun and educational kids’ activities, and, of course, pumpkin picking. The patch will stay open until October 31st, and pumpkins are 50 cents per pound. cedarcirclefarm.org


Windy Ridge Orchard, North Haverhill, NH

Apple season has begun at Windy Ridge Orchard, with more than 18 varieties to choose from. You can pick your own from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. There is also a farm stand and café, plus weekend wine tasting from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. windyridgeorchard.com


Hathaway Farm, Rutland, VT

Hathaway Farm is known for its HUGE 12-acre corn maze, but you can also pick pumpkins in the patch on weekends starting mid-September. www.hathawayfarm.com


Green Mountain Orchards, Putney, VT

Known as one of Vermont’s largest apple orchards, this farm was started in 1914. Green Mountain Orchards also grow pumpkins (plus blueberries, peaches and Christmas trees.) You can also enjoy apple cider, cider donuts, and pies, then check out the horse-drawn wagon rides (or sleigh rides in the snow)! www.greenmountainorchards.com


Whitcomb’s Land of Pumpkins and Corn Maze, Williston, VT

Take a drive up to this pumpkin farm established in 2003. Whitcomb's Land of Pumpkins and Corn Maze sells already carved and specialty pumpkins from September 22nd through October. www.whitcombslandofpumpkins.com


Wellwood Orchards, Springfield, VT

 Wellwood Orchards offers wagon rides into the orchard to pick your own apples or you can purchase already picked apples and other produce at their country store. They also sell pumpkins, plus there’s a petting zoo and plenty of food. wellwoodorchards.com
