Jun 02, 2021 02:50PM ● By Kaitlyn Malone

This summer, try out some excellent pies and satisfy your sweet tooth. Whether you are craving something chocolatey and creamy or a refreshing berry pie, we found several spots you can count on to find just the right pie for you!

Here are the top places in the Upper Valley to find fresh pies this summer.

Umpleby's Bakery Café, Hanover

Umpleby’s does it right when it comes to making their baked goods irresistible. The owners Charles and Carolyn Umpleby, work to make their place a “bakery utopia,” and it’s even said that “the Devil won’t come to Umpleby’s for fear of being baked in a pie.” Here you can’t go wrong with their Apple Crumb Pie. The apples in the filling are crisp and not too sweet where it is nicely paired with a delicious sweet crumble on top. In case you are interested in a less traditional pie this summer, try out their Pear Cranberry Crumb. It’s still delicious, but you get a lovely mix of flavors between the tart cranberry and a softer, sweeter flavor of the pear, along with the classic delicious crumble topping. Umpleby’s is also a Vendor at the Norwich Farmers Market, so that you can keep an eye out for their pies there! For more information, check out their website.

Woodstock Farmers' Market, Woodstock

The Woodstock Farmer’s Market takes place at The Woodstock Square on Saturdays, April through October, between 8 am and 1 pm. From June through September, it will also be open on Tuesdays between 8 am and 1 pm. Here you have the option of choosing pies from Bridge 'N Sweets Gourmet Bakery and Bakehouse! You can pick up a cream pie from Bridge ‘N Sweets and then saunter over to the Bakehouse, where their mixed berry pie looks divine. Ask them and see what pie they’d recommend. Maybe there is a new one with some particularly delectable ingredients they just made! It’s always fun to see what the Farmers Market has in store and absorb the enlivening atmosphere as the community comes together. Find your veggies for your dinner salad at one of the other vendors and snag a pie for dessert! For more information, you can go to this website.

Piecemeal Pies, White River Junction

This place specializes in meat pies, but it does make some berry hand pies and a few fruit pies by special order that are delicious. Try an Apple-blueberry for those full summer flavors. This place has got their crust down to a fine art. If you are in the mood for a fresh summer savory pie, this is the place to go! You can choose vegetarian English pies with spinach, kale, feta, or try their Chicken and Leek pie. They are open Wednesdays through Sundays between 10 am to 3 pm. Check out their website for more information.

Lou's Restaurant & Bakery, Hanover

Lou Bresset, a US Marine veteran, began the coffee shop and full-service bakery in 1947, which has been passed on through the decades and has evolved into a community staple. You can’t go wrong with a fresh summer pie from Lou’s. Perhaps a Coconut Cream pie is calling your name? Or was it the Strawberry Rhubarb pie?! Try out Lou’s to satisfy your craving.
